How to Get a Blood Test in Barcelona Without a Spanish Doctor

Living in Barcelona is brilliant - the sun, the food, the frankly alarming number of beautiful people on electric scooters. Getting a blood test, however? That bit doesn't make the Instagram reels.

In Spain, the public system works like this: you register at your local health centre, book an appointment, a GP writes you a referral, and then you wait. This process takes weeks or months. If you don't have a GP relationship here, that route isn't exactly practical.

Good news: a blood test in Barcelona doesn't have to start with a doctor's referral.

You choose the panel you want, pay directly, and walk in the same morning, as long as the location is open. Results vary by test - from the next working day to around a week.

What tests can you choose?

At Diagnostic Station, you can choose from:

  • Basic health profile - complete blood count, glucose, cholesterol, liver enzymes, kidney function, and a full urine screen. The annual check most people keep meaning to book and never do.
  • The general health panel - everything in the Basic health profile plus the full cholesterol breakdown, proteins, iron, and a more precise kidney filtration rate. The fuller picture that explains a lot when energy is low and nobody can say why.
  • Hormone panels - testosterone, estrogen, cortisol, SHBG. Relevant for men and women, and rarely offered proactively by a standard GP.
  • STI and sexual health panels - HIV, syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia, hepatitis B and C. Fast and without the awkward explanations.
  • The Thyroid Panel Plus - goes beyond the standard TSH to check the actual hormones your thyroid is producing, how much your body has available to use, and whether your immune system is involved.

How the process works

Simpler than ordering anything from a Spanish government website, which is a low bar but a meaningful one.

  1. Choose your test or panel online. Each panel page explains what is included, what sample is needed, and how long results take.
  2. Pay directly online. Prices start from €45, and you can see the full price before you pay.
  3. Walk in during collection hours at a laboratory in Barcelona. Same-morning visits are welcome, as long as the location is open.
  4. Give your sample. A blood draw for most panels. The Basic health profile also requires a first-morning urine sample, which you bring from home - the test page tells you what to expect before you pay.
  5. Results vary by test - from the next working day to around a week for more complex panels.

No waiting room number ticket, and no repeating your surname slowly three times while someone types it incorrectly anyway.

What Andrew Huberman recommends testing annually

Andrew Huberman has spoken about annual bloodwork as a baseline health habit worth building. His recommended panel covers glucose, HbA1c, a full lipid panel including ApoB, fasting insulin, liver enzymes, kidney function, complete blood count, vitamin D, testosterone (total and free), thyroid, and inflammation markers like hsCRP.

Most of these are available at Diagnostic Station, without a referral. Think of it as your body's annual data pull - the kind your doctor actually wants to see when you walk in with a question.

The problem nobody warns you about

The public system in Spain is genuinely good when you have access to it. The issue for internationals, especially in the first year, is the gap between arriving and being properly registered. Even once you are registered, the standard public blood panel is relatively limited - the minimum required, not the full picture a health-conscious person might want.

Direct lab access fills that gap. You are not bypassing your doctor, you are arriving at their office with more information than you would have had otherwise, which is not a workaround, it is just being prepared.

What happens with your results?

Results come back depending on the test, from the next working day to around a week for more complex panels, and the expected timeframe is shown on the test page before you pay. When they arrive, bring them to your doctor. A good result gives them a baseline, an unexpected one gives them a head start, and either way you are walking in with data instead of a vague description of how you have been feeling lately.

At Diagnostic Station, you can choose your panel online, walk in the same morning at a laboratory in Barcelona, and let your doctor do the rest with results that actually give them something to work with.
