Iron lets your red blood cells carry oxygen to every tissue, and when stores are low the first signs are often tiredness, breathlessness on exertion, cold hands, brittle nails or hair shedding. Your blood count can still look normal at that stage, because the body uses up its reserves before haemoglobin falls. This panel looks at your iron from every side: ferritin for the iron in storage, serum iron, TIBC, transferrin and the saturation index for the iron in circulation, and a complete blood count for your red blood cells and haemoglobin, all in one draw. It suits people who run or train often, regular blood donors, anyone eating mostly plants and anyone with heavy periods. Before you start an iron supplement, check whether your stores actually need it.

- Complete blood count (CBC): Complete blood count: red cells, white cells, platelets.
- Ferritin: Shows how much iron your body has stored. It can also rise when your body is dealing with inflammation.
- Serum Iron (Sideremia): How much iron is circulating right now. Not the same as ferritin - this is the immediate snapshot, not the stored reserve.
- Total iron-binding capacity (TIBC): How much iron your blood could carry if every iron-carrying protein were full. It rises when your iron stores run low, so it shows whether your body is looking for more iron.
- Transferrin: The main protein that carries iron through your blood, made by your liver. Your body makes more of it when iron runs low, so it shows how your body is managing its iron supply.
- Transferrin saturation index: How much of the protein that carries iron in your blood is actually carrying it. The lab calculates it from your serum iron and TIBC, and it shows whether iron is getting where it's needed.
