Your body needs a few weeks to build antibodies against HIV, which is why most tests have to wait for your immune system to react before they can see anything. PCR doesn't wait for that reaction, it looks for the genetic material of the virus itself, the same technique you probably remember from COVID, so it can pick up HIV-1, the type behind almost all cases in Europe, from 3 to 7 days after a risk. If the risk was very recent, it gives you an answer earlier than any antibody-based test can. This is one of the most advanced HIV tests on the market: a high-sensitivity PCR that looks for the RNA of the virus itself. Not all HIV tests look for the same thing, so before you compare prices, check what each one measures and who analyses it.

- Qualitative HIV-1 PCR (early detection): Allows early detection of the infection, after a window period of 3 to 7 days following a risk exposure. The laboratory recommends confirming negative results at 30 days after a risk exposure.
