HIV duo: detection at 10 to 18 days

Sample: Blood

This test looks for HIV in two ways at once: the p24 antigen, a protein from the virus itself that appears very soon after infection, and antibodies, the defences your body makes against HIV-1 and HIV-2. It's also known as the fourth-generation HIV test, and infection is detectable after 10-18 days.

What does each component mean?
  • p24 antigen (Ag): A protein from the virus that appears very soon after infection, which makes it possible to detect the virus before the body makes antibodies.
  • Antibodies (Ab): The defences the immune system generates specifically against HIV-1 and HIV-2.
What is the window period?

The window period is the time between exposure to the virus and the moment a test can detect it reliably.

  • Combo test (Ab/p24): It has a window period of 10 to 18 days (thanks to the detection of the p24 antigen, the virus is usually detectable at 2 weeks). A definitive negative result is usually confirmed once 6 weeks have passed since the risk exposure.
