The 7 STIs/STDs behind ulcers and blisters

Sample: Urine

Have you got ulcers or painful blisters in the genital area? It's more common than you think. Genital ulcers can hurt, itch or cause no symptoms at all, and maybe it's also hard to pee. This test looks for seven sexually transmitted infections (STIs/STDs) that could be behind it: herpes 1 and 2 (type 1 shows up more on the lips and type 2 more on the genitals), syphilis, chancroid, chlamydia LGV, shingles and cytomegalovirus. It uses PCR: it doesn't wait for your body's reaction, it looks for the genetic material of the germ itself. That's why it's more relevant than the antigen tests most clinics usually order. Because it's so sensitive, it can find these infections even at the very start or when there's very little of the germ, so you can get treated sooner and lower the risk of passing them on. It also tells one germ from another, which makes the diagnosis more precise and avoids unnecessary treatment.
