Losing hair while your periods are irregular, your skin breaks out, you had a baby this year or your cycle is changing with age? Then iron and thyroid may not be the whole answer, and this test measures your hormones too. It includes everything in our hair loss test: ferritin, TSH and free T4, vitamin D, B12, zinc, a full cell count and high-sensitivity CRP. And it adds the hormones from your ovaries and your adrenal glands: testosterone, SHBG, DHEA-S, estradiol, prolactin, LH and FSH. Want to do it this week?

- Complete blood count (CBC): Complete blood count: red cells, white cells, platelets.
- Ferritin: Shows how much iron your body has stored. It can also rise when your body is dealing with inflammation.
- TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone): The pituitary's message to the thyroid, rising when the thyroid is underactive and falling when it is overactive. The thyroid sets the pace for metabolism, energy, weight and mood, and it also affects the menstrual cycle and fertility.
- Free T4 (T4L): The thyroid's main output hormone, converted into T3 by the body. Low free T4 with high TSH confirms an underactive thyroid.
- Vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D, calcidiol): The form of vitamin D your body stores, built up from sunlight on your skin, food and supplements. It shows whether your levels are enough for your bones, muscles and immune system, and whether supplements are working.
- Vitamin B12 (cobalamin): Vitamin B12 is a vitamin your body can't make, so it comes from animal foods, fortified foods or supplements. You need it to make red blood cells, keep your nerves healthy and copy DNA. When levels are low, it can show up as tiredness, pins and needles in the hands or feet, a sore tongue, low mood or trouble concentrating. This marker measures the total B12 in your blood.
- Zinc: A trace mineral your body needs in small amounts for your immune system, wound healing, skin, hair, taste and smell. Your body can't store much of it, so your level depends on what you eat.
- High-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP): A very sensitive measure of C-reactive protein, which your liver makes when there's inflammation in your body. It picks up low, ongoing inflammation that a standard CRP test misses, and it's often added to cholesterol results to look at the health of your blood vessels.
- Total testosterone: The main androgen, made by the testes, the ovaries and the adrenal glands in different amounts. It plays a part in libido, muscle, bone, energy and mood, and a level outside the reference range can be linked to changes in hair, skin, fertility or the menstrual cycle.
- SHBG (sex hormone-binding globulin): A protein that carries testosterone and oestrogen through your blood. Hormone attached to it can't be used, so SHBG helps explain the gap between total and free testosterone.
- DHEA-S: An androgen made almost entirely by the adrenal glands, the small glands sitting on top of the kidneys. Read next to testosterone, it helps tell whether extra androgens come mainly from the adrenals or from the ovaries or testes.
- Prolactin: Made by the pituitary gland at the base of the brain, prolactin is known for milk production after childbirth, but it is present in everyone and can slow down the hormones that control ovulation and testosterone. A high level can affect periods, libido and fertility, and stress, poor sleep, intense exercise and some medicines can raise it too.

- LH: A pituitary hormone that triggers ovulation and tells the testes to make testosterone. Read next to FSH, it helps show whether a hormone change starts in the brain's signals or in the ovaries or testes themselves.
- FSH: Sent from the pituitary gland, FSH tells the ovaries to grow follicles and the testes to make sperm. Its level shows how hard the brain is working to get a response, and it rises when the ovaries or testes respond less, as happens with age.
- Estradiol (17-beta): The main form of oestrogen, made mostly by the ovaries and in smaller amounts by the testes and body fat. It keeps bones strong and plays a part in the menstrual cycle, skin, libido and sperm production, so both low and high levels can matter.
Hair loss and hormones test for women
Thinning hair rarely arrives alone in women. It comes with cycles that have shifted, with skin that breaks out, with the months after a baby, or with the changes of the years around menopause. When that is your picture, iron, thyroid and vitamins still matter, but the hormones your ovaries and adrenal glands make deserve to be read at the same time.
Reading only the nutrients would miss the hormone side. Reading only the hormones would miss low iron or a thyroid that has drifted, which are more common. This test reads both: it contains everything in our hair loss test and adds the hormones a specialist asks for when there are signs of hormonal change.
How these hormones are involved in hair loss in women
Testosterone and hair loss in women
Women make testosterone too, in the ovaries and the adrenal glands, and a level outside the usual range can be linked to changes in hair, skin and the menstrual cycle. Specialists add it when hair loss comes with signs of androgen excess, such as acne, extra facial or body hair or irregular cycles.
SHBG and hair loss
SHBG carries testosterone through your body, and the testosterone attached to it cannot be used. That is why specialists read it together with total testosterone: the total alone does not show how much of it your body can actually use.
DHEA-S and hair loss
DHEA-S is a second source of androgens, made by the adrenal glands. Read next to testosterone, it helps tell whether extra androgens come mainly from the adrenals or from the ovaries.
Prolactin and hair loss
Prolactin can change with your cycle and after a baby. A high level can affect your periods and slow down the hormones that control ovulation, which is why it is on the list when hair loss comes with irregular cycles.
Estradiol and hair loss
Estradiol, the main form of oestrogen, plays a part in your menstrual cycle and your skin, and both low and high levels can matter. It is on the list because hair thinning and hormone change often share the same months, after a baby or in the years around menopause.
LH, FSH and hair loss
LH and FSH are the signals from your brain that run the ovaries. Read together, they help show whether a hormone change starts in those signals or in the ovaries themselves, which matters when hair loss comes with cycles that have changed.
Iron, thyroid, vitamins and hair loss
Low iron stores are one of the most common links to diffuse hair loss, above all in women who menstruate, and ferritin can be low even when the cell count is normal. Both an underactive and an overactive thyroid are associated with diffuse hair loss. Vitamin D and zinc tend to sit lower in people losing hair, and B12 is a common addition on specialist lists, especially with a restricted or mostly plant-based diet. High-sensitivity CRP helps read your ferritin, because inflammation can push it up even when iron is low.
What this test does not show
It does not include DHT or progesterone, and it does not diagnose any condition. If your only symptom is more hair in the drain and your cycles are regular, our hair loss test is the shorter version.
Frequently asked questions
Which hormones are tested for hair loss in women?
Specialists look at testosterone with SHBG, DHEA-S, estradiol, prolactin, LH and FSH when hair thinning comes with irregular cycles or signs of androgen excess. All of them are in this test, together with the thyroid and nutrient markers.
When does a hair loss and hormones test make sense?
It fits women whose hair is thinning alongside irregular or absent periods, acne, extra facial or body hair, the first year after a baby, or the years around menopause. It also fits anyone who has done our hair loss test and now wants the hormone side read in the same context.
Is this the same as the Female hormone test?
No. The Female hormone test is built around cycle and fertility questions and includes progesterone and androstenedione. This test is built around hair and adds iron, vitamin D, B12, zinc, the cell count and inflammation.
Can I do this test after having a baby?
Yes. Hair loss in the months after a birth is common, and this test reads both the nutrient and the hormone side of it.
Should I stop my supplements before the test?
Check the preparation shown with your order. If a supplement is not mentioned there, ask the laboratory when you arrive.
Where can I get a hair loss and hormones test?
You buy the test online and go to a partner laboratory in Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid or Málaga. In Barcelona and Madrid you go during collection hours. In Valencia and Málaga you go with an appointment. Get this test with Diagnostic Station.
The results of this test are for guidance only and are not a diagnosis. Talk them through with your doctor.
