Level 1 of 3Results in 9 daysBlood Tests for Hair Loss
Sample: Blood
Losing more hair than usual? Before you spend on shampoos and supplements, rule out the deficiencies a specialist checks first. This blood test checks ferritin (iron stores), TSH and free T4 (thyroid function), vitamin D, B12, zinc, a full blood count and high-sensitivity CRP. These are the markers usually requested at the first appointment for diffuse or sudden shedding, because they help identify possible deficiencies or imbalances that can affect the hair cycle. A first step towards more information on the most common factors linked to diffuse shedding. Available in Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia and Málaga. Test this week.

- Complete blood count (CBC): Complete blood count: red cells, white cells, platelets.
- Ferritin: Shows how much iron your body has stored. It can also rise when your body is dealing with inflammation.
- TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone): The pituitary's message to the thyroid, rising when the thyroid is underactive and falling when it is overactive. The thyroid sets the pace for metabolism, energy, weight and mood, and it also affects the menstrual cycle and fertility.
- Free T4 (T4L): The thyroid's main output hormone, converted into T3 by the body. Low free T4 with high TSH confirms an underactive thyroid.
- Vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D, calcidiol): The form of vitamin D your body stores, built up from sunlight on your skin, food and supplements. It shows whether your levels are enough for your bones, muscles and immune system, and whether supplements are working.
- Vitamin B12 (cobalamin): Vitamin B12 is a vitamin your body can't make, so it comes from animal foods, fortified foods or supplements. You need it to make red blood cells, keep your nerves healthy and copy DNA. When levels are low, it can show up as tiredness, pins and needles in the hands or feet, a sore tongue, low mood or trouble concentrating. This marker measures the total B12 in your blood.
- Zinc: A trace mineral your body needs in small amounts for your immune system, wound healing, skin, hair, taste and smell. Your body can't store much of it, so your level depends on what you eat.
- High-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP): A very sensitive measure of C-reactive protein, which your liver makes when there's inflammation in your body. It picks up low, ongoing inflammation that a standard CRP test misses, and it's often added to cholesterol results to look at the health of your blood vessels.
Blood Tests for Hair Loss
The first blood tests for hair loss check iron stores, thyroid function, vitamin D, B12 and zinc. If you are finding more hair on the pillow, in the shower or in your brush, these are the values many specialists look at before considering other tests. You buy this test online and go to a partner laboratory in Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid or Málaga.
Hair loss, hair thinning and hair shedding can look the same from the outside. Low iron, a thyroid problem, low vitamin D or low B12 can all appear simply as more hair coming out. Testing them one at a time means a new visit for each guess. Testing them together shows you all of them before you spend more on shampoos and supplements.
How iron, thyroid and vitamins are linked to hair loss
Ferritin and hair loss
Hair follicles need iron in storage to stay in the growth phase. Ferritin shows how much iron your body has stored. Low stores are one of the findings most often checked in hair loss across the whole scalp, especially in women who menstruate. "Low-normal" ferritin is debated: some studies link it to increased shedding and others find no clear threshold. That is why iron is not started on the basis of a number alone.
Full blood count and hair loss
A full blood count detects anaemia. Specialists usually request it together with ferritin, because iron stores can be low even when the blood count is still normal.
Thyroid and hair loss
The thyroid influences the cycle in which hair renews itself. Both an underactive and an overactive thyroid are associated with hair loss across the whole scalp and can make hair thinner. TSH and free T4 are among the first values checked for this reason.
Vitamin D and hair loss
Vitamin D is involved in the hair follicle cycle. Lower levels are frequently found in people with hair loss, and the association is studied especially when there is limited sun exposure.
Vitamin B12 and hair loss
Follicles depend on B12 for cell division. It is often included when there is a restricted or mostly plant-based diet, or other reasons to suspect deficiency.
Zinc and hair loss
Zinc is needed for keratin production. The body stores little of it, so levels depend largely on intake. It is sometimes checked when diet or absorption may be an issue.
High-sensitivity CRP and hair loss
Inflammation can raise ferritin even when iron stores are low, so ferritin alone can look better than it really is. High-sensitivity CRP is included so ferritin can be interpreted in that context.
Hair loss in women and men
The same markers are requested for men and women when hair is falling across the whole scalp. In women, low iron stores are an especially common finding.
If the hair loss comes with irregular cycles, acne or increased facial or body hair, many professionals extend the testing with hormones. That fuller panel is our Women's hair and hormones test.
Frequently asked questions
What blood tests are done for hair loss?
Specialists most often start with ferritin, thyroid function (TSH and free T4), vitamin D and a full blood count, then add B12 and zinc. This test includes all of them, plus high-sensitivity CRP.
When does a blood test for hair loss make sense?
It fits especially well if the hair loss is spread across the whole scalp and not in one patch, if it started after an illness, a diet change, a stressful period or a pregnancy, or if you have been taking supplements for months without knowing whether you needed them.
Can a blood test diagnose pattern hair loss?
Not mainly. Androgenetic alopecia (male or female pattern) and alopecia areata are not mainly diagnosed with this test. It is used above all to rule out factors that can worsen any type of hair loss. It does not measure DHT or any sex hormone.
Can everything be normal and my hair still fall out?
Yes. Pattern hair loss and some scalp conditions do not show in these values. A normal result tells you these factors are not the problem, and that already saves you months of supplements taken blind.
Can I measure a low value again later?
Yes. The Hair recheck measures ferritin, vitamin D, B12 and zinc again, typically three months after a first test.
Should I stop my supplements before the test?
Check the preparation shown with your order. If a supplement is not mentioned there, ask the laboratory when you arrive.
Where can I get a blood test for hair loss?
You buy the test online and go to a partner laboratory in Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid or Málaga. In Barcelona and Madrid you go during collection hours. In Valencia and Málaga you go with an appointment. Get this test with Diagnostic Station.
The results of this test are for guidance only and are not a diagnosis. Talk them through with your doctor.
