Level 2 of 3Results in 3 daysUrinalysis + urine culture
Sample: Urine
When it burns every time you pee, you’re running to the toilet all day or there’s blood in your urine, you want two answers: is this an infection, and what will actually treat it. This test gives you both from one sample. The urinalysis reads your urine’s chemistry and looks at it under the microscope for inflammation, blood and crystals, and shows how your kidneys are filtering, while the culture grows any bacteria, names them and, when something grows, runs an antibiogram to show which antibiotics work on it. Together they tell an infection apart from a stone or an irritated bladder, and point to the right treatment from the start.

- Urinalysis: A general check of your urine, including protein, blood and glucose. It shows what passes through your kidney filters that normally stays in your blood.
- Urine culture with antibiogram: Grows the bacteria in your urine sample, identifies them and counts them. When something grows, the lab adds an antibiogram, which shows which antibiotics work on that germ and which ones it resists.
Urinalysis and urine culture
Burning when you pee, a constant urge to go, a heavy feeling low in your belly, urine that's cloudy or tinged with blood: most people type these into Google and land on "cystitis", and most of the time that's right. But the same symptoms can come from a kidney stone, an irritated bladder or a sexually transmitted infection, and even when it is a urinary infection, the bacteria behind it doesn't always respond to the first antibiotic people try. This test combines the two urine tests that sort that out: a urinalysis and a urine culture with antibiogram, from one sample.
What's included
Urinalysis (orina completa). A chemical reading of your urine, including protein, glucose, blood, leukocytes and nitrites, plus a look under the microscope at cells, crystals, casts and bacteria. It shows signs of inflammation and infection straight away, and also gives you a picture of how your kidneys are filtering.
Urine culture with antibiogram (urocultivo). The lab grows any bacteria in your sample, identifies them and counts them. When something grows, it runs an antibiogram, testing that bacteria against a set of antibiotics to show which ones work and which ones it resists.
Why these two tests belong together
They answer different questions. The urinalysis tells you what is happening in your urine: white blood cells and nitrites point to infection, red blood cells without infection can point to a stone, and crystals add to that picture. The culture tells you who is causing it and how to stop it. Read together, a urinalysis full of signs of infection with a positive culture confirms a urinary infection and names the treatment, while a clean culture with blood and crystals sends you in a different direction.
Blood in your urine
Seeing pink, red or brown urine is unsettling, and it's one of the most searched urine symptoms there is. The most common causes are a urinary infection, a kidney stone, hard exercise and, in women, the period. The urinalysis confirms whether it's really blood and the culture checks for infection, so you know which of those explanations fits. Blood that keeps coming back without infection deserves a proper medical look, especially after 40 or if you smoke.
Who this test is for
- You have burning, urgency or pain when you pee and want to know if it's an infection
- Your infections keep coming back, three or more times a year
- A course of antibiotics didn't fully clear your symptoms
- You've noticed blood in your urine or a change in its smell or colour
- You've had kidney stones and have new symptoms
Men with urinary symptoms benefit especially from the full picture, since urinary infections are less common in men and can involve the prostate. And if you've had a new partner, burning when you pee can also be chlamydia or gonorrhoea, which need a PCR test you can add to the same visit.
When to get medical care first
If you have a fever, chills, pain in your back or side, vomiting, or you're pregnant, go to a doctor or to urgencias the same day. These can be signs of a kidney infection, and treatment can't wait for a lab result.
How to collect your sample
Collect your sample before starting antibiotics, because they can stop bacteria from growing in the lab. Use the first urine of the morning: wash your hands and genital area with water, start peeing into the toilet, catch the middle part of the stream in a sterile container without touching the inside, and finish in the toilet. One container covers both tests. If you're on your period, wait until it ends if you can. The preparation shown with your order has the exact steps.
Getting tested with Diagnostic Station
You buy the test online and take your sample to one of our partner labs in Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid or Málaga, with no referral needed. In Barcelona and Madrid you go during collection hours, and in Valencia and Málaga you go with an appointment. The urinalysis usually comes back first, and the culture follows once the bacteria have had time to grow.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need both tests, or is a urinalysis enough?
A urinalysis can suggest an infection, but it can't tell you which bacteria it is or which antibiotic works. If you have symptoms, especially repeated ones, the culture is the part that guides treatment.
Can I start antibiotics before giving my sample?
It's better not to. Even one dose can stop the bacteria growing in the lab and leave you with a negative culture while the infection is still there.
What if my culture is negative but I still have symptoms?
The urinalysis helps here: blood without infection can point to a stone, and normal results with ongoing burning can point to a sexually transmitted infection or an irritated bladder, which need other tests.
Is this test useful for recurrent cystitis?
Yes, this is exactly where it helps most. Knowing the bacteria and its antibiotic resistance each time means the next treatment is chosen on facts.
