Level 1 of 3Results in 1 dayUrinalysis
Sample: Urine
A few millilitres of urine say more about you than most people expect, because whatever your kidneys filter out of your blood ends up there. This test reads your urine’s chemistry and then looks at it under the microscope, so one sample shows how well your kidneys are filtering, whether sugar or protein is slipping through where it shouldn’t, whether crystals are forming that can grow into kidney stones, and whether your bladder shows signs of infection. It’s a useful first look when your urine looks darker, cloudier or smells different, and an easy addition to any yearly check-up.

- Urinalysis: A general check of your urine, including protein, blood and glucose. It shows what passes through your kidney filters that normally stays in your blood.
Urinalysis test
Urine is one of the easiest samples your body can give and one of the most revealing. Your kidneys filter your whole blood volume many times a day, keep what you need and send the rest out as urine, so its colour, its chemistry and what floats in it say a lot about your kidneys, your bladder and parts of your metabolism. A urinalysis, known in Spain as orina completa or sistemático y sedimento, reads all of that from a single sample.
What a urinalysis checks
The test has two parts. The first is the chemical analysis, which measures:
- pH and density, which show how acidic and how concentrated your urine is, a good clue to how well hydrated you are
- Protein, which healthy kidneys keep in the blood
- Glucose and ketones, which normally don't appear in urine
- Blood, even in amounts you can't see
- Leukocytes and nitrites, two signs of infection
- Bilirubin and urobilinogen, linked to the liver and to red blood cells
The second part is the sediment. The lab spins the sample and looks at it under the microscope for red and white blood cells, cells from the urinary tract, crystals, casts (tiny cylinders formed inside the kidney) and bacteria.
What your results can show
- Protein in urine can point to strain on the kidneys, and is worth following up if it repeats, especially with high blood pressure or diabetes.
- Glucose in urine usually appears when blood sugar is high enough that the kidneys stop holding it back.
- Blood in urine can come from an infection, a kidney stone, hard exercise or your period, and when it shows up without a clear reason it deserves a closer look.
- Leukocytes and nitrites together strongly suggest a bladder infection.
- Crystals are often harmless, and some types are linked to kidney stones.
One value outside the range is not a diagnosis. Urine changes with what you drank, ate and did the day before, so an odd result is usually repeated before anyone draws conclusions.
Who a urinalysis is for
It makes sense as part of a yearly check-up, when your urine has changed colour, smell or clarity, when you notice mild discomfort when you pee, if you've had kidney stones before, or if you have diabetes or high blood pressure and want to keep an eye on your kidneys. It's also the simplest way to see whether you're really drinking enough.
If it burns when you pee and you want to know exactly which bacteria is involved and which antibiotic works on it, our urinalysis and urine culture test adds a culture and an antibiogram to the same sample.
How to collect your urine sample
Use the first urine of the morning, which is the most concentrated. Wash your hands and genital area with water, start peeing into the toilet, collect the middle part of the stream in a sterile container and finish in the toilet. You don't need to fast. If you're on your period, it's better to wait until it ends, and let the lab know about any medication or supplements you take, since some change the colour or the chemistry of urine. The preparation shown with your order has the exact steps.
Getting a urinalysis with Diagnostic Station
You buy your test online and take your sample to one of our partner labs in Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid or Málaga, with no referral needed. In Barcelona and Madrid you go during collection hours, and in Valencia and Málaga you go with an appointment. Every value comes with the lab's reference range, so you can see straight away what looks fine and what deserves a second look.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a urinalysis and a urine culture?
A urinalysis checks the chemistry of your urine and looks at it under the microscope. A urine culture grows the bacteria to identify them and test which antibiotics work. The first can suggest an infection, and the second confirms it and names the bacteria.
Do I need to fast for a urine test?
No, a urinalysis doesn't need fasting. If you add blood tests that do, such as glucose or cholesterol, you'll need 8 to 12 hours without food, with water allowed.
Can a urine test detect diabetes?
It can show glucose in your urine, which appears when blood sugar runs high. A blood glucose or HbA1c test is what confirms diabetes, and you can add one to the same visit.
Can a urine test show kidney problems?
It can show signs such as protein, blood or casts. To see how well your kidneys actually filter, it's read together with blood creatinine and eGFR, which you'll find side by side in our kidney panel.
Does a urinalysis detect sexually transmitted infections?
No. Chlamydia, gonorrhoea and other STIs need a specific PCR test, which also works on a urine sample.
