Level 1 of 3Results in 2 daysCholesterol and triglycerides
Sample: Blood
If you take, or are about to start, a treatment for your cholesterol, or you simply want to check yours, this panel measures your total cholesterol, HDL (the good one), LDL (the bad one), VLDL and triglycerides. It is the basic study of how your body handles fats, and it gives you numbers you can follow over time, for example while you are on treatment. It also gives you a starting point before you begin one, or if you have other reasons to keep an eye on your cardiovascular risk. Want to add it to your cart?

- 1. Come in fasting (12 hours). You can drink water. Keep taking your usual medication unless your doctor says otherwise. Bring your confirmation and an ID.
These are general recommendations. Check the preparation for your tests with your doctor.

- Total Cholesterol: All the cholesterol in your blood. Your body needs it to build cells and hormones, and it's read together with LDL, HDL and triglycerides.
- HDL Cholesterol: The cholesterol carried back to your liver to be cleared. Higher levels are generally a good sign.
- LDL Cholesterol: The cholesterol carried from your liver to the rest of your body. When it's high, it can build up in the walls of your arteries.
- VLDL Cholesterol: Carries triglycerides through the blood. Elevated VLDL is a cardiovascular risk signal on top of LDL.
- Triglycerides: The most common type of fat in your blood, used by your body for energy. They rise after a meal, so they're measured after fasting.
- Atherogenic risk (TG/HDL ratio and non-HDL cholesterol): Two numbers worked out from your cholesterol results. The TG/HDL ratio hints at small, dense LDL particles, and non-HDL cholesterol adds up every particle that can clog an artery. Both help your doctor judge heart risk beyond the single LDL figure.
Cholesterol and triglycerides
If you take, or are about to start, a treatment for your cholesterol, or you simply want to check yours, this test gives you five values: total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, VLDL and triglycerides. It is the lipid profile, the basic study of how your body handles fats, and one of the tools used to assess cardiovascular health.
Lipids are fats. They are part of your cells and they give you energy. Your body needs them, but abnormal levels can contribute to cardiovascular disease. Measuring them shows you where your own numbers are today.
What the lipid profile includes
- Total cholesterol: all the cholesterol carried in the particles that move it around your body.
- HDL cholesterol: the cholesterol carried back to the liver to be removed. This is why it is called "good" cholesterol.
- LDL cholesterol: an estimate of the cholesterol that can be deposited in the walls of your arteries. This is why it is called "bad" cholesterol.
- VLDL cholesterol: the cholesterol in the very low-density particles, which also carry most of your triglycerides.
- Triglycerides: a type of fat that travels in those same particles.
LDL and VLDL are calculated from the other values of the panel. They are not measured one by one.
Good cholesterol and bad cholesterol
Cholesterol and triglycerides travel around your body inside particles called lipoproteins. Each particle combines protein, cholesterol, triglycerides and phospholipids. They are sorted by density: high-density (HDL), low-density (LDL) and very low-density (VLDL), among others.
HDL particles carry cholesterol back to the liver, where it can leave your body. LDL particles are the ones whose cholesterol can end up deposited in the artery walls, forming plaques that can eventually lead to blockages. VLDL particles carry most of the triglycerides.
Each value of the panel describes one part of this system, which is why the five are read together.
Who it is for
- You take a treatment to change your lipid levels, such as statins, and you want to follow your numbers.
- You are about to start one and want your starting numbers first.
- You have other reasons to keep an eye on your cardiovascular risk.
- You want to check your cholesterol and triglycerides, with no particular reason needed.
What this panel does not include
The lipid profile measures fats. It does not include apolipoproteins or lipoprotein(a), which are separate tests, and it does not include high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), which some cardiovascular risk assessments add. On its own, it does not diagnose any condition.
Getting it with Diagnostic Station
You buy the test online and go to one of our partner labs in Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid or Málaga. In Barcelona and Madrid you go during the lab's opening hours, and in Valencia and Málaga you go with an appointment.
Frequently asked questions
What does a lipid profile measure?
It measures five values: total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, VLDL cholesterol and triglycerides. LDL and VLDL are calculated from the other values.
What is the difference between HDL and LDL cholesterol?
HDL is the cholesterol carried back to the liver to be removed, which is why it is called "good" cholesterol. LDL is the cholesterol that can be deposited in the artery walls, which is why it is called "bad" cholesterol.
What are triglycerides?
Triglycerides are a type of fat. Most of them travel in the VLDL particles, which is why they appear in the same panel as your cholesterol.
Is a cholesterol test the same as a lipid profile?
No. A total cholesterol test gives one number: all the cholesterol in all the particles. The lipid profile adds HDL, LDL, VLDL and triglycerides to it.
Why measure it again later?
To follow your numbers over time, for example while you are on a treatment for your cholesterol.
